The 172’s four seats and modest fuel burn suit the long VFR cross-countries that Texas distances invite, and basing costs are generally friendlier than on the coasts — making it easier to keep a simple, trainer-class airplane affordable.

Operating a 172 is inexpensive by four-seat standards — about 8–9 gallons an hour — and Texas helps on the fixed-cost side: hangars are more available and more affordable than in California, and the state has no income tax (though sales/use tax can apply to the purchase — check current rules with a tax professional). Budget for covered storage anyway: Texas heat and hail are hard on paint, glass, and avionics.

Look at engine time since overhaul and the logbooks first — many 172s have trainer histories with a lot of cycles. Texas sun and summer heat bake interiors and can craze old skylights and windows, so check the plastics and paint. Confirm annual and AD status, and have an independent A&P do the pre-buy rather than relying on the seller’s shop.
